Netgear RT311 Router Reset Issues / Hyperterminal
Posted by Michael D. Atella on February 7th, 2004

I am trying to reset my Netgear RT311 router.

Since Netgear was so kind as to leave off a convenient reset switch (it sure
didn't lessen the cost though), in order to reset this, I need to connect a
standard straight RS232C 9-pin serial cable to the routeršs console port to
a serial port on a PC, and then, using Hyperterminal, I need to flash the
latest ROM file to the router.

I have followed the instructions exactly using several different PCs.
Unfortunately, I get the same result each time. Hyperterminal does not seem
to respond to any of my keyboard inputs. I have local echo turned on, and
I've tried tweaking every setting that can be tweaked. After cycling the
power (i.e., yanking the power cable out), the router is supposed to ask you
to 'hit any key' to enter debug mode, and I do get this on the terminal
screen. But nothing I hit will make Hyperterminal send the 'enter' signal
to the router.

What am I missing? I'm using the latest version of Hyperterminal. I have
tried this with several different cables and three different computers.

I would ask Netgear, but they have this great policy of charging for support
on items (even if they are less than a year old). Quite franky, this
Netgear router is not worth the fee they quoted me for their inept script
reading support.

Any ideas?

Hyperterminal has always been a little squirrely or worse. I have
several times had to make a new connection repeatedly in order to get
the thing to function. Most of the time VT100 emulation works the best
from my experience, although I have never failed to have the keyboard
echo. There are a number of freeware terminal emulators for Windows
that you might try and anything should be better than HT. Google:
windows terminal emulator. Also are you sure that you don't need a null
modem serial cable since it is a computer to computer connection?

problem. You need a straight-through 9 pin cable. Check with a
multimeter to ensure that you one.

Next possibility is speed. As I remember, the Rt311 defaults to
2400 bps. Either set Hyperterminal to 2400 (and 8-N-1), or telnet
into the router and select a higher speed. Then set Hyperterminal
to the newly selected speed.
btw - Hyperterminal works with the RT311 w/o making any significant
changes. Just set the speed and 8-N-1. Don't "tweak" anything
else.

If all attempts via Hyperterminal, use TFTP to upgrade the
router.

As for the original problem - if you simply need to reset / reboot
the router, you'll find this option on menu 24. Choose System
Maintenance (4), then reboot system (11).

access to the Netgear via this porting can also render the router
completely inoperative, permanently, if you go screwing around with
things you know little or nothing about.

A newbie can render his router into a paper weight with hyperterm as
he is "experimenting" with the various complex command structure.....

FTP worked fine. <--not a newbie, but thanks for asking. I'm off to tinker
with my complex command structures. Seeya.
