Netscape, Comcast in DFW Area
Posted by Harvey Gratt on November 7th, 2003

I'm in the Plano, Texas area. Starting the last few days, my Netscape
7.1 browser loses its ability to resolve some Internet addresses. If I
open up IE, I can get to those sites and it makes Netscape start to work
again.

If I close Netscape, neither it nor IE will work for a while. This is
all very intermittent. Rebooting the machine (Dell Dim 8300, win xp pro)
also clears things up.

Anybody else see this type of problem and/or have any fixes?

Thanks,
Harvey

Next time that happens you need to test the connection and dns lookup.
Bring up a cmd prompt and test connectivity and dns.

ping 66.218.71.198 That tests connectivity to yahoo.com
ping yahoo.com That tests dns lookup for yahoo.com
Either test fails, it is not Netscap's problem.

If it is a common site get the ip address when it works and save it
for when it fails.

Check your cable modem web page if you can
http://192.168.100.1

Example from mine.
Downstream Motorola SURFboard sb4220 Upstream
Frequency 639000000 Hz Locked Channel ID 1
Signal to Noise Ratio 33 dB Frequency 19504000 Hz Ranged
QAM 64 Ranging Service ID 2666
Network Access Control Object ON Symbol Rate 3.200 Msym/s
Power Level -1 dBmV Power Level 39 dBmV

You can run ipconfig /all to get your gateway ip address and ping it
during a failure to see if it is causing your problems.

Mine varies from 8 to 10 ms

Thanks. I will try that. FWIW, I had another occurrence about an hour
ago. This time I closed my software firewall (Zone Alarm Free) and that
also fixed the problem - very strange.

I have now set my internet zone in ZAF to medium instead of high to see
if this makes a difference.

One other quick question, I use a wireless router connected to my cable
modem. Do I need to place the IP address of the router (gateway) in the
trusted zone of ZAF. Things have worked fine for weeks without doing
this - each networked computer and printer are in their respective,
approprate ZAF trusted zones.

Thanks,
Harvey

Draw yourself a picture of your routing or save the output from
tracert yahoo.com

Now you can ping each node along the route through your ISP's gateway.

Now that you have provided more information about your setup, anyone
of them can cause your problem.

Worse case, someone broke into your wireless router and/or you have
a virus dinking up ZAF.

Since I do not run your setup I can not provide any more input.

If I had your setup I would dual boot something like Mandrake linux or
run Knoppix linux from a cd and see if I still had the problem to
eliminate windows, virus, ZAF as a cause.

If you have a cd burnner, you can download and burn the knoppix iso
from http://source.rfc822.org/pub/mirror/knoppix/

KNOPPIX_V3.3-2003-09-24-EN.iso 23-Sep-2003 19:42 700M
KNOPPIX_V3.3-2003-09-24-EN.iso.md5

you use the md5 to verify the download is good before burning the cd
with a md5sum program.
