- New T1 line problem
- Posted by hoyt pollard on June 8th, 2004
I just moved into a new apartment, so forgive me if I don't have all
the details. Apparently, we have a T1 connection backed up by a DSL
(Verizon). The T1 company (named Tritech, I think) set everything up
yesterday. Our landlord told us that all we had to do was plug in and
go. When I plugged in to the T1 jack, our phone line went dead. What
happened?

My guess is that your "T1 jack", is not a T1 jack. Sounds like it
is wired to your telephone line.

Here is a likely scenario. The jack is really an Ethernet 10Base-T
interface. Your landlord is providing a building-wide LAN, which
connects to the Internet via a router fed by a T-1 access line
that all tenants share. Has nothing to do with regular phone. I
would call the Tritech outfit. YMMV.

That sounds right to me. I called the TriTech people, and told them
what was happening. They told me I had to call the building management
and get someone out to "check the wiring." Somehow, I am not
encouraged. Is there anything specific I can say to TriTech that might
get a better response? Thanks for your help.

Are you using a "straight-thru" or a "crossover" cable from the wall
jack to the network card in your pc?

I would ask them specifically what device or interface type they
expect to be connected to the jack they provided. Is it:
1. Ethernet (probably 10Base-T twisted pair) connecting to a your
PC "NIC" card/port ?
2. DSL, in which case you need a DSL modem ?
3. Is a "splitter" required to separate data from telephone ??
4. or what ??
It is highly unlikely that you need to make a direct connection to
any T-1 circuit. This would require hardware not normally used by
end user/consumers.
