No detect Modem PCI card
Posted by Nadir Sahnoun on December 29th, 2003

Hi all,

i have problem to install my PCI modem card (BCM Broadcom V.92 56k) under
Windows 2000 Pro SP4 and under XP Pro SP1a on PC HP Vectra VLi8 (550 mhz and
256 SDRAM). The PC don't reconize the modem card. The PCI card is not
detected by the OS. The OS don't detect that one card is plugued on the PCI
connector.

When i try to install the driver, it's give me error "no equipment
compatible" nevertheless it's the well driver. I changed PCI connector, i
have the same error. All my PCI connector (i have 3) work fine, i tested its
by installing other card such network card, graphics card...

And i can be sure that the modem work fine. i tested it on other machine
(DELL PC) with XP Pro and it's work fine !!!

I have 2 serials ports integrated to mother card. By using HyperTerminal, i
can see COM1 and COM2 but i can't see COM3 (or COM4) coresponding to modem
PCI card. So, i can't execute commande such ATZ or ATDT... for test
communication between modem and Windows.

No card displayed with yellow color... on Device Manager !! I tried to
install Modem by using Control Panel and Modem. I have the same error...

I don't have IRQ conflict. IRQ List :
====================
CONFIG WINDOWS
====================
********************* Ports ISA *********************
0 = system time
1 = keybord
3 = com2
4 = com1
6 = floppy disk
8 = time... (CMOS)
9 = ACPI (system compatible)
12 = mouse
13 = compressor arithmetique
14 = canal IDE 1
15 = canal IDE 2
********************* Ports PCI *********************
9 = network card
9 = USB ports
9 = sound card

====================
CONFIG BIOS
====================
Modem IRQ = 3 ou 4
Option PNP = No
==============================================
On the BIOS, i configured my modem to use IRQ=5, it's seem free. The modem
is not detected.
I configured modem to use IRQ=9, it's IRQ shared beween network, sound and
port USB...The modem is not detected.

On BIOS, i activated option PNP = Yes. The modem is not detected
I can't stopped the windows service Plug And Play... This service is forced.

I don't have any conflict message before and after boot and no message on
windows LogEvent.

I flahed and upgraded BIOS. It's dont solve my problem.
The modem is always not detected !

i don't know what i can do now...

By reading the last news, Jackson suggeste to desactivate the second serial
port integrated on mother card. I will try this.

If someone can help me...

Thank You very

Best Regards
@NS

You cannot configure Plug n Play PCI modems in the system BIOS. It's
best to set the System BIOS to Default Settings and let PnP make it's
own assignments.

I don't think that will help in your case, but it won't hurt to disable
it, if it is not being used. Check device manager to see if you have any
Unknown Devices showing up in the hardware list. If so, [Remove] them,
and all COM ports listed under "Ports" and any Modems that may be
listed. Install the correct OS driver/inf files for your modem. Now then
reboot and see if Windows detects the modem and installs it. Note: if
Windows has previously installed the modem as an "Unknown Device",
because the correct driver/inf files were not on your system, it will
continue to see it as that, until it is [Removed]. Windows will then go
through the PnP detection process and install the modem correctly when
the correct driver.inf files are installed on the sytem. Good luck.

Hi,

I don't have unknown device in device manager list.
It's the first install on this machine.

Thanks a lot.

I'm not sure that we can tell whether or not you got a
"V.92 connection" from the log below.

Please note that V.92 encompasses three independent features:

- Quick Connect (QC) which allows the modem pair to train up
faster

- Modem on Hold (MoH) which allows the client POTS line to
handle a separate call without the modem link disconnecting

- PCM Upstream which allegedly supports up to 48Kbps in the
upstream direction (vs. V.90 which supports a max of 33.6Kbps.)

From the below, I infer that you did NOT train in PCM Upstream.
However, I can't tell whether you might have negotiated the
QC or MoH capabilities. You might be able to get this from
#UD after the call.

Hello, I have exactly the same problem, I have taken a lucent winmodem
(branded askey, model V1456VQH89B INT1) from a dell machine (dimension 4100)
and put it in a compaq pro workstation (ap400).

The modem does not appear to exist at all in the compaq machine. When i run
F10setup on boot there is an option to list pci boards, Matrox vga is shown,
scsi controller, ide controller and NIC but no modem.

Windows98 doesnt recognise it (there is nothing relevant in device manager)
but thats not suprising if compaq diagnostics cant see it .

I too have tried all the pci slots, have tried resetting the bios, even
tried reflashing the bios to update it.

If the modem complies with the pci spec, it must show up. Even if it shows
up as unuseable then a driver can be found. But a driver cant be allocated
to a board that isnt recognised on the pci bus.

any other things to try? (have tried all the things in the previous replies
in this thread)

Thanks for any responses

Hugh

There are two possible compatibility issues here:

1. PCI card is powered only on 3.3Vaux, but the PCI slot does not supply
3.3Vaux. If the modem is designed to wake the PC on incoming ring, then it
must use 3.3Vaux, since Vcc is off while the system is in deep sleep. But
not all PCI slots supply 3.3Vaux.

2. The PCI card and the PCI slot use different signaling voltages. Some 5V
cards will not work in a 3.3V signaling environment, and vice versa. This
is per the PCI spec section 4.1.1. I don't know about this Askey modem
specifically.

Hello did any of you figure out your modem problem. I to am having the
same problem with no fix. If any of you have figured this out please
post it here. Thank you, Doug .
