Ohmigod, Earthlink/Time Warner cable sucks soooooooooooo bad.
Posted by Walter Blickner on December 7th, 2003

It's taken me two hours just to find this friggin' newsgroups, so
forget trying to find one appropriate to New York. PLEASE somebody
help.

There's something wrong with my cable service. Time Warner reset the
box and it's still dropping packets. Which means I could chisel my
messages faster into cement and carry them on my head to their
destinations faster than I can email. Great consumer advocates that
they are, they can't get to my place to figure out what the problem is
for SIXTEEN DAYS, and I REALLY want to call them and tell them to fuck
themselves.

So, Time Warner is the problem here, right? What's my alternative?
Honestly, I'll go back to dialup before paying these idiots $44 a
month for their Premature Heart Attack service. Is there a GOOD
website that finds out what my alternatives are? (The ones I've found
seem to be blatant Earthlink ads.)

Anyway, anybody with a choice -- DON'T get Time Warner. It sucks bad,
and customer service is worse. In fact, if you have to choose between
a rat-infested hut with dial-up or a hilltop mansion with Time Warner
cable, I'd go for the hut. You gotta email eventually.

Earthlink has nothing to do with fixing TWC lines, they are simply your DNS
server and email account. Who do you think they call when there is a
problem? Packet loss issues are there with any service, anywhere in the
country, has nothing to do with the quality of your ISP. Packet loss is
usually due to a bad fitting, corrosion, bad NIC card (your pc) or
distribution lines that are chewed by various animals or even your dumbass
neighbor who dug holes in his backyard for a fence without having utility
lines marked...... so much misinformation. Then there's the customer who
complains of packet loss yet has 750 spyware/adaware components on their
computer or better yet has installed a download accelerator designed for
dial-up. Time Warner, Comcast, Cox, SBC, Verizon, Insight, etc... the
problem is common in any network and is fixed as it discovered.

I agree, problems happen and they are fixed when discovered. But this
should also be done in a timely manner and sixteen days is not a
timely manner. Having worked for TWC in the past for a few years I
know that 16 days would never be acceptable to management. Ask to
speak to a supervisor, keep your cool, be respectful of the person on
the other end of the phone (they aren't paid to be abused, they are
paid to help you) and if all else fails tell them to come get your
modem you're going to try one of their competitors. Really though, you
shouldn't have to do much more than ask for a service call. 16 days is
way off the mark.

This is a common complaint against cable TV providers who offer data
services.
Would you trust your phone service to a cable company? Who has the
better "up time" record, a cable company or a phone company?

Cable companies that do not provide phone service provide television
services on a "best effort" basis. Those that do provide primary line
service are bound by the same standards of regulation for such service
that the phone companies are.

Thanks guys! But how do I find out what cable companies I can pick?
I found Cablevision listed in my TV guide but at their website it says
I'd have to switch from Earthlink to Optimum Online, and I don't
really want to lose my email addresses.

Thanks again.

I have Time Warner and Comcast on the pole in front of my house. (along with
Sprint DSL) I am having trouble getting Comcast to fix mine. It seems Time
Warner sucks too if the top note in this thread is right. Maybe I should just
get them all competing in my living room and see who wins.
