OK to use softmodem for CLI, dialler, answer machine, etc ?
Posted by Stefan. on January 19th, 2006

Am in UK on NTL broadband running XP Pro/SP2.

I want to connect my old 56K software modem which fits into a PCI
slot.

I would like to use the modem so my PC can do things like:
display CLID,
act as a phone dialler,
record phone calls,
act as an answering machine,
etc

The modem is a Diamond SupraSST 56i PRO DF
http://www.modem-help.co.uk/mfc/sonic.html#SUP2850

Is it likely this modem can do those things sorts of things above?

PS: I ask because this website
http://www.modemsite.com/56k/buy.asp warns of all sorts of
possible dire incompatibilities such as V.92, speakphone function,
Connexant/Rockwell HSF 56K chipsets, SmartLink and all sorts of
stuff I have never heard of.

The web site completely loses me when he talks about DAA (data
access arrangement), type 1 caller id, full-duplex sound, V.92 PCM
upstream, etc. Sounds like most of this stuff is for dialup to an
ISP but I don't really know.
