- Old modem compatibility question
- Posted by Tuanjie Liu on July 16th, 2004
I have an old 56K V.90 PCI data/fax modem which was manufactured for
Windows 95 & 98. I bought it in 1999. Will there be any compatibility
problems if I use it on Windows XP system? Thanks!

Is it a "hardmodem"? If yes, it will probably work as long as there aren't any
hardware conflicts.
If it's a software modem (HSP56 MicroModem/Lucent
Winmodems/Motorola/U.S.Robotics Winmodem) the answer is "maybe" if there are
drivers for it.

What kinda modemis it? You said PCI modem, so that means a software
modem automatically. You'd have to know the company or chipset for the
driver. Do you know what company?
If it's an Ambient HaM like mine I'm sure you can still get them from
intel's site, which has newer xp ones, they work great. I'm still using my
modem from around then too.

Not always. Both Multitech (MT5634ZPX-PCI) and USR (5610) make
controller based PCI modems.

The company name is Award Technology. I have no idea about the
chipset. The two biggest chips on the modem have LUCENT marks. By the
way, what does software modem mean? Thanks.

Software modem, or softmodem: a modem that does not have controller, all its
functions are done in software.
Hardware modem: a modem that has a controller.
My current modem is a software modem (PC-Tel HSP). It has drivers for XP, but
I never tried them as I use Win 98.
On this case you are looking for Lucent drivers.

I still have the software installation CD came with the modem. I don't
know if the CD will work on Windows XP when my new computer come next
week. I also visited Award Technology website. It seemed their website
never got updated since 1999. Generally, will drivers developed for
Windows 95 and 98 also work on Windows XP?
