Optimize Advice

Today, a co-worker asked me to take a look at his computer. Since he
was in such desperation I agreed. I don't have much info. since he
knows virtually nothing about computers other than how to connect to
the internet. But, the problem seems to be a dial-up connection on a
windows pc, and he keeps timing out and getting booted from a
webserver. It is some sort of gaming (casino based) server.

Are there any general optimizations that can be tweaked to increase
performance? It could be simply that dial-up won't cut it for what he
wants to do, but just in case, I thought I would ask.

Not enough information provided to really help you and him. Timing out and
getting booted from a web server doesn't tell us much. Does he stay
connected to the internet? If so, it probably isn't a modem problem but
something else. It is possible that poor modem performance could be a
contributing factor, causing too slow a response to some required input by
the site. In any case, to check his modem out, things like modem logs and
post-call diagnostics are used.

There are no general optimization strings that work across all modems. In
fact, there are no better general optimization strings other than the ones
provided by the modem maker in the INF files provided for the modems. What
can be done is specific optimizations done on a modem by modem basis for
particular line conditions.
