OT: Comcast question re video quality
Posted by Herb Kauhry on December 18th, 2003

Do you have Comcast and does the TCM channel's audio drop out for a
split-second every few minutes? Tthis happens randomly, sometimes as often
as 10-15 seconds apart, but usually it's spread out every 2-3 minutes.

Locally, they deny a problem - "must be your television, sir". Yet, this
occurs at every home in the area I've been to, where they have Comcast
service.

And the really peculiar thing is - it only happens on TCM. It's irritating
as hell.

I don't get this on the DirectTV feed, so I know it's somewhere between me
and the TCM studio.

This is a wild guess based on my reception. BTW this is completely OT
for this group! Comcast digital is mpg3 digital video converted from
the incoming analog signal. The digital mpg3 video is subject to
interruption sort of like buffer underrun and this shows up on the
screen as an instantaneous pixelization as well as an interruption in
the audio. It was my belief that this only occurred on Comcast digital,
and those of us with just the analog signal (basic cable) would not have
this happen. Lately, though, I have seen the same "buffer underrun"
problem on some of my basic cable channels which seems to indicate that
Comcast is ether using all-digital or is moving to all digital signal
and uses a convertor to bring in the analog signal for basic cable.

Yes, that's what "OT" was indicating. But this is where Comcast users hang
out in goodly numbers. Called Comcast again - well, now they know all about
it and are trying to fix it - have been for a long time but TCM denies any
problems exist.

Part II of the phone call was confirming a $5/month rate increase for
various "digital" improvements (e.g., raised internet caps) - there back "on
topic" :*).

I also found out my service package is an "old' one they don't offer
nymore - one which excludes some 11% in taxes because of the way it's
packaged with the internet service. So, I was told not to change to another
package because I'd start paying the taxes. However, on further checking,
the equivalent service via a new package would cost exactly the same. Huh,
so we're screwing the govamint, and putting the difference into Comcast's
pocket. Eh what?
