Hi,
I am having a problem connecting to an Sportster 14.4 ISA Internal FAX
modem and am looking for ideas.
ATI3 identifies the unit as:
Sportster 14400 FAX v4.1
The modem is located in Korea and I am in the US. The last time I needed
to connect to the system was several of years ago and I don't recall any
problems. The system was taken out of service for a while and is now back
in service. The connection software is Reachout for DOS. The access
number for the modem is still the same. Best I can tell, the system is
basically as it was when it was taken out of service and is other than the
connection problem is operating correctly.
When I initiate a call from my end, the modem answers, but I don't hear
the carrier frequencies I expect. They seem more like fax tones and the
connection fails. When I have the client initiate the call, there is no
problem establishing a good connection. The system is responsive and the
error rate feels low.
I don't have access to the manual for this modem, so I don't know if this
model has external dip switches or even what they should be set to. If
anyone has a PDF copy of the manual they could send my way (steve53 at
eartlink dot net), it would be appreciated. I have several Courier
manuals, but nothing for this specific model.
What I suspect is that some switch or jumper got changed inadvertently,
but I have no easy way to check this. I guess it's also possible the
NVRAM got changed. The client is not very familiar with modems, so it is
difficult to get good feedback from them. This is not unexpected given
the age of the equipment.
I'm hoping someone will recognize this failure mode and be able to point
me at the source.
Thanks,
Steven
