- Problem with modem Lucent V.90 and Windows
- Posted by Chaos Master on July 9th, 2004
Hi people.
PC: 900MHz Athlon (one of the older Athlons), 128MB RAM, 20GB HDD, Windows 98
SE, Lucent V.90 winmodem.
Problem: Modem will connect to the ISP (a free Brazilian ISP) but will not
access any URL (tried: IE 6.0, Mozilla 1.6, Opera 7.51, Netscape 4.5) nor
anything (ex. ICQ, MSN, mIRC) will connect. Looks as if the modem was
disconnected.
The same modem works on Linux (Knoppix) after compiling/configuring the modem
stuff, so it is not a hardware problem.
I guess something on the TCP/IP or dial up networking of Windows is corrupt.
What can be cause this problem? There's no hardware conflicts, modem was changed
to be sure that it's not the modem that is dead.

Reboot and go back and reinstall it.

Could it be that the DNS settings are incorrect? What happens if you
type the IP address of a domain name rather than the domain name
itself?
www.brasnet.org = 66.90.84.100
Try the following commands in a DOS box:
tracert www.brasnet.org
tracert 66.90.84.100
ping www.brasnet.org
ping 66.90.84.100
FWIW, I'm having difficulty accessing those parts of the Brasnet
website that link to offsite URLs, eg http://www.viatrafego.com.br/.
Could that be your problem?

Same thing - it does not work.
It is as though the modem is not sending any data at all.
Nope. It is like the modem is not sending/receiving any data at all.
