- Question about init string for a USR 5605-00 External modem
- Posted by Albert Garcia© on July 14th, 2003
Does anyone know a simple way of finding out the exact init string
being used to initialize a us robotics 5605-00 external modem on
windows 2000. I have checked the usr website with no luck. Ant replies
would be greatly appreciated.

In the INF file, you will find a "recommended" init string. But the only
string actually needed is AT&F1 for any OS other than the Mac (and it's not
the Mac's OS that needs the change, it is the Mac serial port configuration
that dictates it).
When you install the modem properly, the init string will take care of
itself.
Once installed, the init string used will be found in the modem log after
the first use. Or in the Registry if you wish to dig through that (search
for AT&F)

Many thanks for the response! The reason that I was trying to find out
is I am installing a smc router/firewall that allows you to use a
serial modem. One has to enter the proper initialization string in the
routers config to get your modem to dial out. I think the AT&F1 will
work for my needs (hopefully)
Thanks Again!

Ah, that's a bit different... but, yes, that should work. Unless there's a
need to use software flow control. If that's the case, there is a small
change you can make: AT&F2 which gives you the standard factory default for
software flow control.
Tweaking the configuration is not difficult if you run into problems and
several of us here can help.
