Setup of D-Link DSL-300T...
Posted by risadler on January 2nd, 2006

A simple question, which I'll explain later...

When setting up the D-Link DSL-300T, is it necessary for the modem to
be connected to the 'phone (DSL) line? I'm trying to set one up with
only the Ethernet connected and the modem doesn't do anything. The link
LED flickers when to network as active (ie. trying to DHCP), but the
modem doesn't respond.

The 'phone isn't connected, because we don't have DSL yet. We've
ordered it, but the telco has a vicious back-log so won't get to us for
a good month or two. We're therefore using this time to finish the
whole setup beforehand.

Obviously I should test the modem at someone who has DSL, but for
various reasons that is not an option. I simply want to know if it is
possible to access the modem configuration without it being connected
to the 'phone (DSL) network. Otherwise the modem is faulty.

browser and see if it can get to 192.168.0.1. Many models use that address
as an access point.

The other thing I would suggest if you are using XT is to try the command
ipconfig /all after opening a command.com window.

If DHCP is enabled on your PC the results from the command should show you
if your PC has detected the modem and if the modem has assigned an IP
address to your PC.

You might need to power up the modem first, wait a minute or two and then do
an ipconfig /release followed by an ipconfig /renew in order for your PC to
be able to access the modem using the above IP address.

I'm sure others will have other or even better ways to accomplish what your
trying to do. Good luck.

No, that doesn't work.

It looks as if the hardware of the modem is working fine, but that the
software is just not booting up.

I've logged the problem with D-Link (South Africa) and will see what
they have to say.

Updated the firmware to the latest (it was touch'n'go and I had to try
it a few times...) and everyhtinh works fine now.
