Just an issue i'm fighting with TWC of San Antonio that might interest
someone...
Despite well documented residential issues with Time Warner Cable,
I've recently ordered/installed Business Class Cable(BCC), in hopes of
bettering our service.
I made it very clear with my sales person Javier Alvarez, that we
would be running a webserver, needed at least 2 ips and therefore,
would need a router. He assured me of the capability and when the
router was delivered and installed i was quite happy.
Over the weekend, i noticed that our bandwidth/down was decidedly
slower than our residential. Contacting tech support they
informed my the the router was set up 512/512 not the 2meg down that
my contract reads. In the same conversation, i asked about
setting up the firewall capabilities of my router after finding out I
was getting deluged on port 135 from the hundreds of hosts
in the rr.com subnet (mostly dallas and houston- let me know if you
want me to send you the log). The tech went on to tell me 2 things.
1) It was not their fault. Granted, but would not mitigating the
problem be warranted?
2) That he would pass on my desire to block ports on monday (it was
the weekend, Aug 16)
Come the following wednesday, not hearing anything, i called tech
support about 1) the bandwidth and 2) blocking ports.
He said that they would not configure my router in any way and that i
would have to call customer support to get the bandwidth i
ordered. You might imagine i was a little frustrated. So i called my
sales person he said he would check into and call me back.
Never heard from him.
Your decision to leave your BCC customers wide open to attack leaves
me quite incredulous. I try to empathize with your logic but
I'm not getting anywhere. Isnt is in your best interest to protect
your network? Is it the expense of taking 15 minutes to configure the
router? Why not allow BCC customers protect themselves? You mention
that i should get a router and protect myself, which
i have for my client boxes, of course. But i can not bring myself to
buy a 500 dollar multi/ip router firewall when the one that
i am already paying for has the capability.
Today is Friday, 21 August. I still do not have the bandwidth that i
am paying for - neither have i heard from a TWC representive. I do
not consider this BUSINESS CLASS SERVICE. What i am asking is
1) Configure my router to eliminate the undue traffic i am getting on
unused ports(135 right NOW).
2) Allow me to configure it myself. I can. I have. I will if you let
me.
3) Give me the bandwidth i paid for.
4) Come bury the cable in my back yard that you have left there for
more than 6 months.
Or come take your router out. We can discuss returning the residential
class but i doubt it. I might keep the cable TV.Thinking about it, we
may get a Dish, and get rid of the
200 dollars we are paying a month for your inadequate service. And go
with DSL(who i'm told allow you to configure the router's firewall)
If i dont hear from you by Tues, 26 August. I'll figure your not
interested in our $ 200 a month and take the router
down myself and deliver it to you. I'd ask that you please take your
cable out of my back yard in that case. Thank you.
