USR 5686-04 connection problem and flash query
Posted by will kranz on April 1st, 2008

Greetings:
I recently got two USR 5686-04 56K faxmodems on Ebay and had trouble
getting them to connect. As detailed on www.willsworks.net/usr-wav.htm.
This file contains links to recordings of its dailing attempts.
I have solved my problem by setting S32=4, but this is supposed to be a
reserved
setting and I don't know why this allows the modem to connect.
The ATI7 command displays both the FLASH and DSP as
date 2/16/2001 with rev 5.2.9

Anyone know if this is what they originally shipped with, or if its an
updated FLASH? The current flash for this modem seems to be rev 5.4.62.

I'm confused about FLASHing in general. I've read reports here of people
whose FLASH failed leaving them with a dead modem. Is this common? If I
have it working should I leave it alone, or might I be able to remove the
odd setting I'm using above? Its already a V.92 so I'm inclined to leave it
alone.

I assume that after a flash the options line and revision information
change, but
the Product ID does not?

Thanks.
