Verizon DSL vs. Charter Communications Cable Internet?
Posted by Noel on May 2nd, 2004

Hello:
I wonder if anyone has any comments on Verizon DSL vs. Charter
Cable? I live in Whittier, CA. and those are my phone company and
cable company, respectively. I have been with Verizon for years now,
provisioned at their ADSL Bronze Package at $34.95 per month, which is
768/128. I received a package from my cable company, and spoke with
the representative, who states typical speeds are 3 MB downstream (or
more), that they will guarantee 2MB downstream, with 256 MB upstream,
for $39.95 per month, or $42.95/month (if they provide the modem).
I realize that you need to get cable with this, but I only
subscribe to the basic Charter package, which is less than $15.00 per
month, including taxes (and includes a huge number of channels; a much
better deal than my folks, who have Adelphia and live in La Habra
Heights, CA.). I also realize that most people subscribing with
Verizon DSL now get 1.5/128, using a different type of system and
modem (unfortunately, I would have to cancel or downgrade my DSL
service, wait a month, then upgrade or re-subscribe to get the new
modem and provisioning, albeit at the same price.) Obviously, I would
like to keep my current e-mail, but the difference in speed is
tempting. Does anyone have any experience with Charter.com?
Thanks
Noel

There are alternatives you may or may not be aware of. Just because Verizon
is your phone company doesn't mean you have to purchase DSL from verizon.
And just because Charter is your cable provider doesn't mean you have to
purchase cable modem service from charter. There probably are other
providers who will sell you service, possibly with the same equipment you
are using now. Of course Verizon and Charter won't TELL you that. And even
if you go to www.dslreports.com , you might not get a complete listing of
the providers in your area. I've already used TWO providers in my area that
are not listed in dslreports, for example. One common third-party provider
that offers decent service at competitive prices is earthlink. You might
want to visit www.earthlink.com to see what they offer in your area. I
doubt if you could get (earthlink on charter) cable modem service YET, but
you probably could get (earthlink on verizon) DSL service. The way it works
in our area, Earthlink DSL is the same price as Verizon DSL, but the maximum
speed was doubled on earthlink (until recently). Thus earthlink dsl was a
better deal. You'd have to change your e-mail address, but it's POSSIBLE
you could use your current DSL modem for earthlink or another third-party
provider. -Dave

They are excellent here in Fort Worth, but from what I have read, are
somewhat irregular across the country. Much depends on the physical
'plant' they have in your area. Check with users of cable internet in
your city for their experiences.

Like Ron, my experience with Charter has been good, but I am on the east
coast. You might want to ask users in your area about their service [as he
suggested] at this forum: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/charter
