- Messenger constantly disconnecting
- Posted by FD on March 31st, 2006
Hi everyone,
I've been having some trouble with MSN Messenger 7.5 in the past months. It
keeps disconnecting automatically. I downloaded Messenger Live yesterday and
now it's even worse.
It's not that bad when I'm not using the computer or Messenger. The worst is
when I'm typing a message to someone. Now I get disconnected every 30 seconds.
I run WinXP Pro SP2 and I have a high-speed cable connection through a SMC
router. I called my ISP and they sent a few technicians who didn't find any
problem with the line. I'm pretty sure that the router isn't the problem
either since I also get disconnected when I plug straight into the cable
modem.
I'm also positive I don't have any spyware or viruses on my computer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated since my contact list is getting
pretty annoyed by my constant disconnecting/reconnecting !

i think this is where johnathan kay would tell you to run %appdata%\Microsoft
and to delete the msn messenger folder. don't waste your time, it doesn't
work. I've done it 3 times now, and I still have issues. Leave it to
microsoft to put something out that doesn't work.

You may already know this but I will tell you anyway. I solved my disconnect
problem by exiting AIM and outlook when I use messenger. Seems to me that
these programs always checking there servers screw up the messenger. Hope
this helps.

Problem solved !
The problem was caused by interference from the new VoIP service. My ISP
fixed everything.
Thanks for the replies though...

interesting. I don't run any other programs that access the net. I usually
close up outlook express, and I don't use AIM. But perhaps there is
something from my ISP that still runs. I'll look into it. Thanks for that
info. It's a better explanation then do this when THIS clearly doesn't work.
