- Messenger Not Working
- Posted by leo.gosland@gmail.com on November 14th, 2005
Hi,
Last week my messenger stopped working - when I launch it, the icon
appears in the system tray (with an x next to it as though it is logged
out) but nothing then happens, the window does not open and I cannot
click on the icon, I end up having to end the process in task manager.
This happens everytime I open it, and I have tried uninstalling and
reinstalling messenger with no luck - I am running XP Professional and
the latest version of messenger (7.5). Dos anyone have any ideas? I
have not installed any new software or changed any settings that would
have caused this. Thanks in advance.

Please can anybody help me with this? I have deleted all MSN messenger
keys and I still get this error even after reinstallation.

Hi Leo,
this is the first time that I see this kind of error, are you sure that you
have deleted the folder MSN Messenger?
So, try to delete this folder too:
c:\documents and settings\Administrator (or your principal name)\Application
data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\*.*
PS: if you have some contents installed, you will delete it too, so I think
is better you make a backup of this folder before to delete it.
Let me know if it work.
Regards,
Marcello

Hi Marcello,
Thanks for the reply. I tried again this morning and this is what I did
(still no luck):
-Uninstalled MSN Messenger from add/remove programs
-Deleted MSN Messenger folder from C:\Program Files
-Deleted the application data folder as you describe above
-Deleted all MSN Messenger keys from the registry
-Deleted all my history, temp internet files etc
-Reinstalled messenger
The same problem occurs. I have found that if I leave it long enough
the messenger window does appear, however as soon as I move my mouse
onto the window the pointer disappears and then the window stops
responding. I then have to end the process via task manager.
Does anyone have any ideas? I can't think what else I can do. Thanks,
Leo.

Been having same problem with messenger since updating to version 7.5.
Have tried re-installing messenger (including uninstalling and fully
removing from registry and drive) with no success. Does anyone know of
a site that offers downloads of previous versions of messenger?

If anyone else is having this problem, I fixed it by uninstalling v7.5
and installing v7.0 which you can download from:
