- Two versions of Messenger running together
- Posted by Wibblethorpe999 on February 5th, 2006
An older version of Messenger and the latest 7.5 version are both starting
and running automatically on my PC. I have tried to remove the older version
and also to disable it from starting when Windows logs-on, but without
success. Whenever I run Outlook or Outlook Express (Office 2000), yet another
old version pops up.
Help!

The second version of Messenger that you are refering to as older, isn't
really "older" its Windows Messenger, it comes built in to Windows XP.
Here's instructions on how to disable it:

Thank you, William.
I have checked the unwanted version of Messenger which is running - it is
version 4.7 and I have XP Home Edition. I followed the appropriate
instructions but the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Mes senger\Client folder
already has the PreventRun DWORD value set to 1. Despite this, even if
Messenger v 7.5 is already running, Messenger v 4.7 runs as soon as I start
Outlook Express, although not now when I start Outlook.
Any further help you can offer me? Thanks

Greetings,
To stop this behavior, close Outlook Express, then download and run the following .reg file:

After this, Messenger will no longer load with OE. Ever.

I recently made the slight error of installing one version of xp over an
already running version. I thought i had deleted the old version but found
the screennames and documents are still in documents and settings however i
cannot get onto the old screen names as they do not come up on the start up
screen. i have tried creating new ones with the same name but this does not
work. If u know anyway in whick i can fix this please email me
gooner_8@hotmail.com. thanks
