is the employer able to read the text of instant messages between co-workers
if they use windows messenger

Greetings,

Yep, Windows Messenger uses plain text and non-encrypted. Of course, if a Live
Communications Server was setup, then TLS could be used which is encrypted but in that
scenario the employer could still read (and archive) the messages.
