- Cable internet through a DSL wireless router. Please help me?
- Posted by BillyLeo@gmail.com on October 27th, 2006
Hey
I used to have DSL broadband which I had running on a Zyxel Prestige
660 wireless router.
Today I got Cable broadband (much faster!) They gave me a motorola
modem with it.
I assumed that I would be able to hook the cable modem into the
wireless router and it would be fine.
Problem:
There isn't a specific ethernet port for the incoming cable modem
ethernet cable, like there is for the phoneline. It does have 4
ethernet ports, so I put the ethernet cable from the cable modem into
port 1.
I searched for a wireless network and found my one. I connected to the
wireless, the internet didn't work.
I then tried plugging my laptop into the zyxel port on port 2, straight
away it was online.
So, the cable internet is being passed over the LAN ports. However, it
isn't being passed via the wireless. Can anyone tell me how to get the
wireless router to take the internet fron the lan and pass it onto the
wireless?
Thanks!

It sounds like what you have there is a combination modem and router. So
your cable modem is also its own router. No need for a separate router,
isn't that convenient? <sarcasm>
Anyways, you can get both routers working together with each other,
basically you'll have to use your old one like a basic hub, and disable
its WAN port, and its DHCP server. The DHCP services will have to come
through the new router. Note, it might be possible to
You will have to take a short cross-over cable between one LAN port on
the old router and connect it to another LAN port on the new one. This
connects the two routers together, one as a slave router to the other.
Yes, the wireless services are likely coming from your old router. Since
that one is no longer connected to the WAN, you will not get any
Internet out of it. But once you've slaved one router to the other,
everything should work again.
