Can't view workgroup to share printer
Posted by Theo on June 15th, 2005

I'm trying to hook my notebook up to my network so I can share the printer, etc.
I changed the computer workgroup to my workgroup name, rebooting and then adding
a new network printer but it shows when browsing for a printer "microsoft
windows network" and not my workgroup computers.
I go to "view network computers" and it says "Network is not accessible, you
might not have permission to use this network resource" "list of servers for
this network is not available".
When I view network computers from my desktop, I see the laptop but it says
"Network is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this network
resource".
I'm hooked up through a dlink 524 router.
I have another desktop that's on the network and works just fine. Both the
desktops have XP pro and the notebook has XP home so I'm thinking it has to be
something unique to the home edition perhaps.

Does anybody know why this is doing this?

Thanks,

Theo

Force it to connect by directly typing the name of the machine and
printer resource into printer wizard. This usually happens when a
network resource is shared under one user name in one computer and
completely different user name in another, so it'll ask you which
remote user name and password you want to use for that resource.

Theo,

I bet you have a firewall in the way and it causes all sorts of wierd
and woderful behaviour. Switch the firewall OFF on both machines and
test. Chances are it'll work.
