Cat5e cable limits and runs
Posted by Jeremy Davis on March 7th, 2004

I have networking already set up in our house. My dad lives two house
away from us (with a duplex apartment between us). I am wanting to get
his puter set up on our network. I see my options as either running
cat5e from ridge cap to ridge cap on the roofs, thus making a total
cable distance of about 200 feet. I would use a guy wire between
points, then tying the cable to the guy wire. Or burying the cable
under ground, which would also be about 200 feet. Wireless is pretty
much out since I would have to get two external antennas. Probably
wouldn't use them for very long. Does anybody think this is an alright
idea? If suspended above the rooftops, would there be interference
from the guy wire or lightning? Thanks in advance!

So, you're going to connect that Cat5 lightning rod to your PCs, eh?
Brilliant. Try to take pictures of the fire.

A pair of media convertors to buried fiber, of course.
