Help!! Need more 802.11 range from MS router with laptop
Posted by User on July 10th, 2003

I've got the Microsoft (why? it was on sale at BestBuy with mega
rebates) Wireless router connected to DSL.

The router seems to have decent enough range with a desktop wireless
card. The problem is that the laptop Microsoft card seemed to have
almost no range.

Swapped it for a LinkSys card, with some improvement, but still not
enough range. I'm looking for about 150 feet max...anyone got any
ideas on improvements?

If swapping the laptop card is an option, which brand / model should I
look for?

Thanks in advance....Burger

Is that because you want all your neighbors to be able to piggyback on
your service and read your mail?

Nah...

Closest neighbor is over 800 feet away.... I just need to get my
laptop to work in my garage, that's all.

I'm lucky anyway, most of my neighbors are elderly and couldn't spell
network, let alone piggyback on mine.

Oh, no, that's a very good point....their age isn't really the point,
their level of sophistication is what's suspect.

I can't say much about elderly....I'm well over half way their myself
