I have a wireless router in my office but the signal will not reliably
reach the basement where I have need to use my laptop. There is
already a TV cable line running from the office -> attic -> basement
so I figured I could run a network cable the same way.

I guess I have a couple of options:

1) run the cable to the basement and put a port near the location I
use the laptop -or-

2) Is it possible to put a access point at the end of the cable so I
am now wireless in the basement?

I am not clear as to how I would do the cable. Crossovers, jacks,
etc...

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Levittron makes a nice wall plate system with color coded jacks, you can
combine a TV outlet with a single RJ45 in one faceplate.

You'll need a crimper and a punch-down tool to build your own cable from
scratch. Good crimpers and punches aren't cheap.

Alternatively, buy a long enough pre-crimped cable to make the trip, cut the
basement end off and run it, then connect the RJ45 with a reasonable facimile
of a punch-down tool and you'd be in business without investing in tools
you'll likely not use again...
