How do I setup a 2 pc gaming network w/ internet?
Posted by jfw06013 on December 23rd, 2004

I have the following hardware:

1 HP Vectra VL (500 MHz) Win98se and 3Com Ethernet card and drivers
installed.

1 25 ft. crossover Cat 5 cable.

1 home built Athlon 1600+, WinXP Home with 2 Dlink 530 TX+ Ethernet
cards (drivers by Microsoft)installed.

1 Dlink DI-604 router.

1 Motorola SB5100 Cable Modem.

Objective:

I want to play games, share files and connect to the internet with both
computers without using ICS.

I also want to control internet access for both computers (i.e. I want
sole administrative rights because the HP will be run by an 11 year old).

I just can't seem to work it out. Any help or links will be appreciated.

You can't construct a filtering agent and then stick it off to the side and
expect it to accomplish much.

If you want to use one box as a filtering web proxy on behalf of the other
box, the first box is going to have to run a NAT service at some level and the
second box is going to be cabled exclusively to the first. And the router
becomes mostly redundant...

I (finally) got lan going (not using ICS) and can see shared files and
folders, play music and transfer files from machine to another.

The host machine can acess the internet but the client can get on the
'net only intermitantly and usually only with Windows Update!?.

I'm not sure what to do next.

I typed in ipconfg/all and this is what I got:
