- Looking for fast network storage
- Posted by Gary on April 5th, 2007
I'm looking for network storage, mainly for backups. The one that
appealed the most to me was the Netgear SC 101. But reviews said it
was painfully slow, which was sure to trouble me.
Can anyone suggest other network storage, not too expensive, that
would be faster?
Thanks in advance.

Without knowing what your definition of inexpensive is, have you looked
at tape (DLT, LTO, etc.)?

The last time I relied on tape I did a triple backup and when I needed
something all 3 were bad. I would recommend using 3 500GB drives in a
rotating backup scheme, or some of the now expensive 1 or 2 TB external
hard drive setups. Personal experience has made me very un-trusting of tape.

Disclaimer,
We did a lot of work with strong magnets and hard drives survived close
encounters where tapes did not.
