Need help configuring two routers
Posted by phelper on June 16th, 2006

I have Yahoo SBC DSL.

It came with a 2Wire DSL Modem/Router.

I have no interest in using the wireless on this 2Wire Router, nor do
I want to use it's networking. I want to feed the internet from the
2Wire into my existing router, a DLink gigabit router.

I would think that I should:
a)Take the network cable from the one of the 2Wire ports out to the
WAN input on the Dlink.
b)configure all PCs on my network to use the DLink as the default
gateway
c)all the computers plugged into the dlink lan ports

However this doesn't work. Here's what does work:
a) cable from 2Wire DSL into one of the lan ports (not the WAN) on the
Dlink.
b) configure the PCs on my network to use the 2Wire DSL as the default
gateway (effectively skipping the DLink)
c) all of the computers and the 2Wire plugged into the Dlink router.

Seems odd to me.

Why can't I get the 2Wire to feed into the WAN port on the Dlink?
I've got the Dlink configured with an IP and the 2Wire can see it...

I'm lost...

Thanks.

It can be made to work, but you want the network connecting the two
routers to be on a different subnet from the network on the LAN side
of the DLink. The WAN side of the DLink and the LAN side of the
2Wire need to have compatible IP addresses and netmasks (perhaps
via DHCP). You may also need to decide who's responsible for login
protocols and defeat the login procedure on the one that isn't.

Parse carefully what you read here. :-)
