Network Setup help needed
Posted by Comfortably Numb on August 8th, 2003

Hello,
I have somewhat of an odd situation:

I have a pc., laptop and printer. What I would like to do is to share a
modem connection, print to the printer from pc and laptop. However, I would
like to have my laptop connected with no cables (wireless). What is the
best way to do this? Suggested equipment needed?

Thank you for your time and help.

Not that odd - quite common, really.

Short answer: study how to do it wired, then buy all wireless equipment.

Long answer: Your desktop has the modem, right? On the desktop, engage
Internet Connection Sharing. Your desktop has the printer connected to it,
right? Engage File and Printer Sharing and share the printer. Your desktop
will need a network card (wireless) and your laptop will need a network
card (wireless).

The question I cannot accurately answer is: Can two wireless network cards
talk without the need for a base station intermediary? Wired cards can, of
course, by using a crossover CAT5 cable. I don't know how/if wireless cards
would do this.

Buy yourself a wireless access point.
