Folks,
Bought a Brother MFC-7420 5-in-1 laser printer\fax\scanner unit the other
day to replace the dying fax machine. It works well, and will even function
perfectly as a laser printer and PC-fax, using a D-Link Wireless Network
Print Server(DP-G310). However, to date, I cannot get the scanner functions
to work, despite the unit being well capable of scanning across a
network(and necessarry software supplied with the MFC).
Looking in more depth at the reccommended Brother wireless network print
server, I finally find some detail that actually describes it as a wireless
network print\scan server. I wish I'd found this little gem out before I
bought the D-Link unit!
My question is: Is there indeed a different type of print server designed to
include network scanning as well? Is this a common feature, and is it
likely I could get the D-Link unit to work the same? I am thinking not, but
wondered if anyone else had succeeded in getting a simple print server to
pass the scanning commands through as well.. They seem to use TCP-IP
protocols to send & recieve, so I wouldnt have thought it hard, but then I
havent (yet) tried to pull the D-Link box apart to see whats inside...
I do have a use for the D-Link printer server; running another simple laser
printer for me. However, Brother arent very forthcoming about the features
of their model of printer server. The Brother unit is an NC-2200w, and it
uses a USB link to the printer (as does the D-Link). I shied away from the
Brother to start with, as the Brother doesnt seem to work above 802.11b,
wheras the D-link is g. I also could pick the D-Link unit up off the shelf
in the local computer store. Not my personal choice in brand, but it seems
to do the job without fuss.
Any info or thoughts appreciated.
Cheers,
