Where do I find out more information about the "Intel PXE ROM"?

Every now and then I get a boot error referring to an "Intel PXE ROM". The
error always goes away upon the next boot so the boot problem isn't what
I'm asking here. I just want to know what this "Intel PXE ROM" is.

I googled for "What is Intel PXE ROM" and found many people had problems
with this 'thing' but I did not find an explanation of what it actually is.

Do you know what an Intel PXE ROM is? What does it do?

If it matters, here is the boot error I get every once in a while on my
Thinkpad laptop running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (the message isn't the
question though).

Do you know where I find out more about what a "PXE ROM" is?

(Again, the question isn't about the error because it goes away when I

I've found out what a PXE ROM is and now I want it disabled!

I tried the Thinkpad F1 Bios Setup Utility.
It has two related headers, Boot and Network.
Both have the same four items
- Hard Drive
- Removable Devices
- CDROM Drive
- - Hard Drive
- Removable Devices
- CDROM Drive
- IBM 4.0.22 slot 0240

Since there is no explicit PXE option, I wonder if I should just turn off
all networking boots (all four) or should I just turn of the last of the
four above (IBM 4.0.22 slot 0240)?

Any advice?

It's a ROM that goes on a socket on a lan card which enables booting
from a "boot server" over a network, instead of booting from any local
drive. Motherboards and laptops that have lan ports on the motherboard
(in the laptop) normally have this code internally in the bios.

The message suggests that your machine is trying to boot up over (from,
really) the network. This may be an indication that it's attempt to
boot up from the hard drive failed.

I think that relates to your network card. It could be your hard drive is
failing and the computer attempts to boot from the network. Test your hard
drive carefully.

The error message your getting is misleading. What is actually happening
during the boot process is as follows. The system boot ROM is looking for
the first available bootable device according to the search order set in
the NVRAM. Typically the order is CD/DVD, Floppy, HardDisk, Network.

Because you are getting a PXE boot error is an indication that your system
is not finding a bootable CD, DVD, floppy or HardDisk.

The fact that it can't find the bootable HardDisk in an indication of a
soon to happen hardware failure with either the HardDisk itself or the
harddisk controller.
