3 workgroup PCs that can ping but unable to see PCs in workgroup
Posted by Chris Brobst on October 4th, 2005

I have 3 XP pro machines in a workgroup. All PCs are attached to a D-link
broadband router (DI-808HV).I can ping each machine form one antoher. Problem
is when I go to Network Places and view the workgroup computers nothing shows
up not even an error. Funny thing is that if I go and disable ad renable the
LAN connection on each PC (must be all the PCs) the PCs show up but only for
45 mins.

Little Background:
-Firewall is wide open on router
-Firewall on each PC allow file and print sharing and file and print sharing
is enabled on each PC
-the guest account is enabled on each PC
-NetBIOS setting is set to Default (use netbios from DHCP)

Chris,

You have a browser conflict here, and I'm not talking about Internet Explorer.
Please read this article for information.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...lways-see.html

Please provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, as a
start. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely:

Chris,

OK, that's a start. You have 3 computers, and each has elected the same master
browser - D60B7B834B9E4A0. Yet each shows:
There are 0 servers in domain WORKGROUP

And you have on each of the 2 that are not D60B7B834B9E4A0:
Could not open key in registry, error = 5

You need to start with looking for misconfigured / overlooked firewalls, and at
registry setting restrictanonymous, on each computer.
Misconfigured / overlooked firewalls:

Registry setting restrictanonymous:

If no help yet, read my articles:

Please let us know if any of these suggestions are of any help. What you learn
may help others in the future, and that's the purpose of these forums.

Now I have check the firewall setting on each computer and they look good. I
even disabled the firewall on each client. Still no luck. I looked at the
router's firewall settings and its wide open. I also check the registry
settings for the guest account and everything is set correctly. We have the
guest acct active and checked that. Also check the security policy to logon
locally and anonymously. I also checked the registry settings as indicated in
your KB.

Question - can imaging machines cause issues with the browser? As 2 of the 3
machines here are exact images -minus computer name?
Question - does the NetBIOS name have to be less the 8 characters?
Question - will using the (default option) NetBIOS over TCPIP play a role in
this issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have to create an image of a
machine that if network ready with the capabilities of browsing the network
at anytime in a workgroup.

Thanks.
Chris

Chris,

The browser is a dynamic, peer-peer resource cataloging system. As long as
you're not imaging a computer that some server (Windows computer running the
server service) sees as its browser, the browser process won't be affected.

You should find details about these issues:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...lways-see.html

There is no 8-character limit on NetBIOS names. There are some name length
limits, but none that involve 8 characters, that I am aware of.
<http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/advanced/help/default.asp?url=/windows2000/en/advanced/help/print_choosing_a_printer_name.htm>
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000...inter_name.htm

<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#Sharing>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...d.html#Sharing

The Default NBT setting could be a problem. If your DHCP server is a NAT
router, it won't provide the setting to turn NetBIOS on. That setting is for
LANs that have real DHCP servers, not NAT routers running DHCP.

Thanks.
No server will be running and Yes the router, I believe uses NAT.
All machines are XP Pro.

With that should we be use the Peer to Peer service or the Simple TCP/IP?
Both are currently turned off on the computers.

Chris,

The essential components and services are listed in my article:

Still having problems:
- I am not sure exactly what you are saying about imaging a server that
service was running on. Do you mean that I may have imaged a machine and
while it already had a master browser to point to?

Ther are 2 types of images running in this test workgroup.
2 as an image of on antother with differnt PC names and 2 of a different
image with different PC names.
All the PCs have teh following services running.
-Computer browser
-server
-TCP/IP/net bios helper

Any help that i can get for this would greatly be appricated as it is
holding up my project from deployment.

Tested to see if computer browser was the issue so i disabled the browser
service on all but one computer and after 45 mins again the computers in the
workgroup disappear.

So any which way that i slice it I can't get the computers to stay after 45
mins with out restarting all the machines or disable/renable the LAN
connection on each PC in the workgroup.
