I am having trouble getting out to the Internet when I hook on to a wireless
network outside my office and at home – like at a restaurant or wireless hot
spot.

I use window xp which is completely up to date w all updates. I also use
Norton’s Internet security and anti virus.

When I go to a new wireless network and do a view wireless networks – I can
see and connect to the new network. Meaning I can see the network in my
“network connection� and under “details� I can see the IP address of the
network I am hooked to.

But, even though I am connect to the new wireless I can not get “out� to the
Internet.

I have Window’s firewall turned off, as i use the Nortons firewall in normal
use and then even turn my Norton’s firewall off and I still can not get to
the Internet on the new wireless network.

I have even typed the wireless IP address into the Norton’s excepted list
and I still can not connect.

Any suggestions on how to get to the internet on new wireless networks

Don't disable your firewall when you're connected to any network, even for
testing. I don't use NIS so I'm not sure what it blocks, but if you're going
to disable it, make sure you enable the Windows firewall before connecting -
it doesn't block any outbound ports, so it likely won't prevent you from
connecting.

What are the symptoms you're seeing? Page not found? ?

Is this a company laptop? If so, it may be locked down to prevent you from
doing this.

Presuming that is not the case, and presuming this happens on *all* your
wireless connection attempts and you know they don't require any sort of
fancy authentication, if you type

ipconfig /all

in a command prompt, you should see the default gatway & DNS servers you've
been assigned by the DHCP server, provided you got one, and can try pinging
each in turn....if you can ping both the gateway IP and DNS IP successfully,
try pinging www.yahoo.com or something to see if that's working. If so,
check your internet options in control panel and look at the connection
settings.

the message i get is web page not found - then - do you want to work off line
- or try again - this is the type of message when there is no connection at
all.

but the window network page says i am connected to the wireless network - so
i am assuming i am somehow prevented from connecting to the internet on this
"NEW" wireless connection.

i have a laptop - but it is a out of the box machine as i am not part of a
big company - anything done to the machine is by me personally and i am a
small business owner not an IT guy.

just running Nortons internet security - but again, even when i turn this
all off i still can not get to the internet

crazy i know but a real pain in the .... as i travel a lot and need to be
able to connect from anywhere

Did you try any of my suggestions re pinging? Post back when you've done so,
with your results.
