Cannot access home network when the target computer is firewalled
Posted by Patrick on October 8th, 2005

I have a home network. I just installed a firewall on the computers and now,
when I want to browse one of them from another computer in the network it
says "MSHOME is not accessible". If I turn off the firewall it then works
fine. I think I have to open certain ports in the firewall to fix this, but I
don't know which ones Xp networking is using.

Thanks

Look in the firewall's configuration and set the lan as trusted. I
usually do this with an IP range. Example:

192.168.1.0-192.168.1.254

You do not need to open any ports.

Your solution has helped me a lot. Now, both computers can see each others
without problems. Now the remaining problem is that they're both in read only
mode, which is not very useful when file transfering. I will start a new post
for this.
