- Can't find my laptop in workgroup
- Posted by Brad Schluter on May 15th, 2006
I have a small network, 3 desktops (2 running xp pro and 1 running mce 05) 1
laptop (xp pro) that is docked into network along with a NAS drive. I can
see all of the computers and drives in view workgroup computers except the
laptop. When I view network computers on the laptop I see everything except
the laptop. I can ping the laptop from any of the other computers but can't
see it in my workgroup. I have verified that it is in the same workgroup
and is setup for sharing. I have this problem regardless of firewall
settings on the laptop. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Try:
1. On the laptop go to Administrative Tools/Services and set the Computer
Browser Service to Manual. Reboot.
2. If #1 doesn't work, Start/Run regedit ENTER
Navigate to: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA
If the value of RestrictAnonymous is not set to 0, set it to 0 and reboot.

Thanks for the info but I still can't see the laptop in my workgroup. I
tried the first step and that didn't do it so I looked at the second step
and RestrictAnonymous was set to 0.
Any other ideas?

Brad,
The mysterious restrictanonymous setting is one of many possible causes of your
problem. Another would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or
other security component. There are still more possibilities too. Read this
article with an open mind.

Take a look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and
"net config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read
this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):
