Crossover Cable Problem
Posted by biggoron on November 28th, 2005

Hi, I am trying to network my desktop and laptop using a crossover cable.
Both computers are on XP Pro SP1, I have manually set the IPs, and both are
on the same workgroup. Both computers can ping the other. However my
desktop can not access my laptop but my laptop can access my desktop. What
else could be the problem?

I forgot to mention, I have the windows and any other firewalls off. I do
have a virus scanner on, but they both have the same virus scanner and since
one computer can access the other I doubt that is the problem.

Make sure the accounts on both machines have passwords assigned to their
log-in accounts. XP requires accounts to be password protected prior to
allowing the account to connect to it for file & printer sharing.

Both computers have different log in names w/ passwords, both have
administrator access. When I try to access the files on my desktop from my
laptop I get a prompt to use my username and pw, that does not occur when
trying to access the files from my Desktop to my laptop.

Are they both members of the same workgroup?

The computers do not need to be in the same Workgroup to share
resources. Workgroups are just a cosmetic/organizational device. Create
identical user names and passwords on each machine. Check your
antivirus to make sure it doesn't also have something like Norton's
"Internet Worm Protection" enabled which is a type of firewall. You
don't need to turn off whatever firewall you are using; just configure
it to allow File & Printer Sharing (Windows Firewall exception tab) or
allow the lan as trusted as an IP range (third-party firewall).
