I bought a used laptop and have put windows XP on it. Which is the same
operating system as my other computers. The laptop network connection fails
to communicate through my router (Linksys Broadband) becuase it alway goes to
the Automatic Private IP Address. The config settings are for DHCP and DNS
auto. The one thing that is different in XP is that you cannot point your PC
to a default gateway to obtain the IP address. It seems to be only used when
you want to specify a specific address. I have tried another computer on the
line and it works fine with the DHCP. The laptop directly connected to the
router through ethernet or through an wireless access point when using
wireless, all revert to Automatic Private IP Addressing. I canot figure out
what to change. Anyone have any ideas?
