domain controller possible security issue network drives disconnect logoff
Posted by sintral@gmail.com on February 13th, 2006

Hi, the problem I'm having is not the typical, "my mapped drives
disconnect after a few mintues." This is much bigger than that. I
think the problem may be with the domain controller. We login using
our first name last initial and passwd. Once the credentials have been
verified we can click on start and see our full name at the top of the
menu i.e. bobj login would see Bob Jackson. What I've noticed recently
is that after a varying amount of time our network drives go down and
the connection can't be re-established without logging off and then
back on or rebooting. Once the drives become inaccessible I no longer
see my name in the start menu, but rather my login. Also, when you try
to doubleclick the drive to re-establish the connection you either get
prompted for a domain login (in which case if you type in your
credentials youget a message saying "windows has tried yours and can't
establish the connection") where you have to enter the credentials for
another user on the network. This works sometimes. Other times it
results in "Windows has detected a possible attempt to compromise
security". This is not a very complex domain that we run here, and
security is anything but tight. We basically just share a few folders
with all users for network storage purposes. We've upgraded the RAM on
our domain controller and that hasn't seemed to help. The domain
controller is WIndows 2000 Server and most, but not all of the
workstations are WinXP pro sp2. The issue has just recently become
apparent, but is happening more and more often each day, and to more
and more users.
