- Explorer quits when browsing UNC paths
- Posted by Bradley Davidson on May 19th, 2006
I have noticed on a number of occassions that Explorer will crash when I am
browsing a UNC path on a network.
My laptop is configured as a workgroup because I use it to visit various
clients and connect to their networks / domains.
I am able to browse on their networks with UNC paths but if I leave explorer
sitting on a folder for any length of time it eventually dies and restarts
explorer.
I have recently reinstalled SP2 to see if this would resolve it but without
any success.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Bradley, what is logged in Event Viewer?

I've noticed a number of occurrences of the following message in my System Log:
"The name "WORKGROUP :1d" could not be registered on the Interface with
IP address 192.168.1.122. The machine with the IP address 192.168.1.112 did
not allow the name to be claimed by this machine."
Event ID 4321 Source NetBT
The other one that is probably directly related is in my Application log:
"The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted."
Event ID 1002 Source Winlogon.
