- Filesharing - Netgear router.
- Posted by abhi on December 9th, 2005
I have two laptops (win2k) and (winXP) connected to a netgear router. one is
a wireless connection, the other is wired.
how do I go about sharing files between the two? Both are able to access the
internet, but not able to ping each other.
Thanks in advance,
abhi

Abhi,
The reason for the laptops not being able to ping each other could be
due to software firewalls on the laptops. Check to see if there are
any firewalls running and if so create an exception rule for file
sharing and ping, or simply for the IP addresses you are using. Also
you may need to setup a route on your netgear router so it routes
traffic between the wired and wireless interfaces.

Well the ipaddresses I get are always 192.1. so those are the router addresses.
There is no software firewall running. I am not sure of the hardware ones.
How do I configure netgear router to setup a route between the two laptops?

If the Netgear router is also a wireless router,
1) Set both PCs to the same Workgroup.
2) Configure a firewall exception for file/print sharing in all/any software
firewall, including SP 2 firewall.

Set the software firewalls to allow icmp packets through.
Have you setup the folders/disks that you wish to share?
Help & Support told me how to setup each computer for file sharing.
