What router do you have?
Look at the manual on how to change:
1. Router password
2. Router ssid
Look here:

Once you get the Windows XP computer to associate with the WAP / wireless
network, a wireless computer is the same as a wired computer.
Associating the client with the WAP is a matter of what WiFi management program
you wish to use. If you use the Windows XP WiFi Manager, you can't do any
better than starting with Joe Davies Cable Guy columns.
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/columns/cableguy/cg1102.mspx>
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/columns/cableguy/cg0302.mspx>
Or, you may use the WiFi Manager included with the LAN card, or your laptop may
have one too. But you gotta RTFM.
Once you associate the laptop with the WAP, then it's just a matter of
networking.
