Hp All-in-0ne printer and print sharing over a network
Posted by BP on January 16th, 2006

I have a desktop with an hp 5510 all in one printer connected via usb and a
dell laptop. both are running windows xp sp2. I can share files from one to
the other, but i cannot print from the laptop on the 5510 after using the add
a printer wizard on the laptop. i have tried installing alternate drivers
for the 5510 (the hp 990c and 550c) and used the port \\computername\shared
name, which i set up on teh desktop. I can see the printer from the laptop.
However, when i print from word or anything else nothing happnes. If I open
the printer on the desktop, it shows one file printing, (presumably the one I
sent) but nothing happens. Of course, I can print from the desktop with no
problem. What am I doing wrong?

Do you have a software firewall installed on the desktop? If so
uninstall it. If that fixes the issue then your firewall was configured
wrong or it changed a setting without asking you.

You also might want to check if the print job even happens on the desktop.

I have the Windows Firewall (XP sp2) installed and running. I can print
from the desktop. However, when I check the print queue after sending a job
from the laptop, it shows the job as"printing", but nothing is happening.
I'll try turning off the windows firewall and see if that works.

I turned off Windows Firewall and the same thing happened. It shows in the
queue, but doesn't print.

What status does the item have in the desktops queue? (Paused, stopped,
or something else.)

What if before sending the print job from the laptop you run the
following command from the run dialog box "\\desktop Computer name" &
enter any user name password information it asks right after that (using
a user name & password on the desktop of course)?

That's all I can think of so far, other then are you using PC-cillin
(this anti-virus software is also a firewall)?

The status is printing and then i cancel it . Then the status is deleting.
However, i have to reboot to get it to actually leave the queue. (If you
know another way to kill it, that would be great, because I cannot print
another job until I kill the one that hangs up.) The only anti virus software
running is McAfee. It is only the anti-virus component though. I'll try your
other suggestion.

I tried run and computer name from the laptop. it showed the shared files
and printers.

What happens if you try to print right after you run "\\desktop Computer
name"?
