IPX/SPX Red Alert 2 problem
Posted by meleeman@gmail.com on October 16th, 2005

I am trying to get a network going for my cousin and I to play Red
Alert 2, and when I go to Network connections and try to add the
protocol, he doesn't have the option for the IPX/SPX? Is there a way
to download this, or install it form the Windows XP CD or something?

XP calls it "NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol",
and it should appear when you open the network connection's Properties
and click Install | Protocol | Add. Is it missing from the list of
protocols that you can add?

Yes, it is completely not there on his laptop. Does it come with
Service pack 2 or something? Cause that might be a reason. He just
got his laptop though, I figured it would have it.

OK, try this:

In the adapter properties,
Install
Protocol
Add

If NWLink is missing, click 'Have Disk';
Browse to C:\Windows\inf

( You may need to show hidden folders to see this -
Windows explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View tab, Show Hidden Files and
Folders. )

Browse to the file 'netnwlnk.inf' then OK your way out.
See if it installs now.

fwiw
Fiddling I added in network properties the Service Advertising Protocol ...
next boot was slow a peek and without user intervention the
NW.link.netBios and NW IPX/s had been installed
