Lan and High-Speed Connection

In my network connections window the only tab is the dial up connection. I
have no LAN or High-Speed Connections tab. Do I need to set up a new
connection or buy something for the cpu? I'm using Windows XP Home Edition.

Do you have a network card installed in this computer? If so, it sounds like
the driver isn't loading properly, or there's a hardware problem. Take a
look in device manager (control panel | system | hardware)...you may need to
get the latest driver from the manufacturer's website while on another
computer with Internet connectivity, copy it to some kind of removable media
and bring it over to your computer.

If you don't have a network adapter, you need one unless you want to use
dialup.
