Hi. I am looking to network 2 computers (one has WindowsXP installed and the
other Windows 98) using a cross-over network cable. Both computers have an
Ethernet port and a dial-up modem. Where I live, we only have dial-up
internet, therefore each computer is set up to connect to the internet
through their respective modems. My goal is to network the 2 computers
together without Internet Connection Sharing. What (and how) would be the
best way to do this?

P.S. I do not know if it is relevant, but the WindowsXP system also has a
firewire card installed that I reserve strictly for my soundcard.

It's OK to run XP's Network Setup Wizard on both computers, but it
isn't necessary.

Right-click and share the desired folders. To access the other
computer's shared folders, use My Network Places or Network
Neighborhood. You can also access the other computer's shared folders
by typing the other computer's name in the Start > Run box in this
format:

\\computer

P.S. Right-click and disable the 1394 network connection. It won't
affect the dial-up and Ethernet connections.
