- Networked computer showing as The Internet instead of Local Network?
- Posted by pepper on November 18th, 2007
Hi,
My apologies if this is the wrong forum for this but all of a sudden my
Windows (XP Pro) indicates in Windows Explorer/My Network Places that the
location of a couple of my computers are 'The Internet' instead on 'Local
Network'. If someone would let me know where to go to correct this I'd
greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
pepper

Chuck, you've solved a minor annoyance that I hadn't been able to figure out for
a long time. Changing from the default local intranet settings in IE did the
trick.
In your article, you state: "This behaviors appears to be independent of the
status of Windows Firewall. It's quite likely that this will affect more than
just the display of the various computers in My Network Places."
Can you elaborate? What else might I notice if I change the default settings as
you have suggested?

Hi Michael,
I haven't tested this, but I'm suspecting that with some firewalls, you'll find
SMBs being filtered more strictly when one or more servers end up on "Internet".
SMBs on small LANs affect browsing (what servers display in My Network Place /
Network), name resolution (conversion from server name to IP address), and
actual access to server shares. And firewalls that are sensitive to zone will
filter SMBs differently.

My thanks too Chuck. I haven't quite figured out how to change all of the
computer's 'locations' back to 'local network' but some are. p
