I am trying to set up my home network. I have a dsl modem and a linksys
switch and 2 desktop computers. Easch desktop has a nic which are lit up and
seem fine the switch is lit up and reading everything. I have the "sharing
hand" by the internet connection on the main desktop. On the 2nd desktop i
cannot get on the net. I noticed on the 2nd computer for the Lan...the ip and
submask do not match the 1st computers ip and submask for either the lan or
the internet connection both lan and internet start 192. and the submask 255.
On the 2nd computer the ip starts 168. could that be the problem? I cannot
see either computer on workgroup computers both have the same work group name
but of course differant main name. Like i said it appears my dsl connection
is shared via the icon. What is going on???? Anyone??

One thing that comes to mind is that your dsl provider is only giving you
one ip address, so the first computer to connect to the internet is fine,
the second on the switch does not get a valid address.. Change out the
switch for a router in order to share that address. This is only
speculation as I do not have dsl. My cable provider does however work this
way.

The basic problem is that the machine with the 168.x address is using its
'automatic default' because it hasn't been given a specific one.

A router would provide DHCP, which assigns addresses automatically. However,
as you don't have one, you need to give each computer a fixed IP address.

For example:

Machine 1: (with modem)
IP 192.168.1.1
Netmask 255.255.255.0
ICS:On


Machine 2:
IP 192.168.1.2
Netmask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS: ISP's DNS Server(s)
ICS:Off

That, or buy a router and set the IPs to automatic. More secure too. If you
use a USB modem a good firewall is essential as it's effectively a wide-open
door to your computer.

Thanks for all the ideas tried em all and nothing yet. I am thinking start
all over. Maybe this may help. I have the DSL Westell 6100 dsl modem/router
with both a ubs and ethernet. I have the Linksys 5 Port workgroup switch
Model # EZXS55W. 2 Desktop computers with Linksys Fast Ethernet 10/100
network cards and both sytems running Windows XP. Desktop 1 has a built in
Ethernet on the motherboard a Intel Pro 100.I sure hope this helps somehow.

Unless your ISP is providing you two IP addresses you need to get rid of the
switch and replace it with a router, or else you won't get both PCs online
at once.
