- Networking - Number of Users Limit
- Posted by BillL on October 6th, 2005
I am using a Windows XP computer in a small office network and want to allow
several users to access it. We have about 10 computers here and occasionally
I get a message on one of the user's computers that say the drive cannot be
accessed because there is already the maximum number of users accessing it.
Is there a setting somewhere that I don't know about that sets up a maximum
number of users (or files) that can be accessed via the network? If so, how
do I change it? If not, please offer any help you can to resolve this.

Windows XP allows a maximum of 10 connections at one time. If you need more,
then either purchase a server version of windows, or buy a NAS device & host
your files on it..

Bill,
The limit is on the number of simultaneous active connections - 5 for a server
running XP Home, 10 for a server running XP Pro. To change that, you will have
to upgrade to an actual server OS, with 15 or more licenses.
