This may seem a strange question to place in this forum but I think it is
more network related than Office related.
I have two XP machines that have a mapped drive to a share hosted on a Win
98 pc. The share is not password protected in any way.
Office 2000 applications running on these XP machines can open a file from
the aforementioned mapped drive but these cannot then be saved as something
else in the same folder or directory structure using 'Save As'. Instead the
following error is displayed:
'The folder <driveletter:>\<foldername>\<newfilename> isn't accessible. The
folder may be located on an unavailable volume or protected with a password'
Searchin the knowledge base produces results that almost exclusivley relate
to web folders - which isn't the case here. The drive mapping is still
connected and files can be accessed with problem using explorer. Indeed, any
other application works as one would expect. In explorer files can be renamed
and copied with no problem.
Office works as expected when opening and saving to a remote NT4 server -
but clearly this is impracticle. It also seems to be OK when one access files
from one XP machine to the other. Interestingly, I have another XP machiine
that was installed some time ago and Office on that has no problem accessing
the shared folder on the Win 98 machine.
I apologise if this turns out to be the wrong place to post but at the
moment it seems to be some sort of conflict between Office 2000 on the new XP
machinies and the shared folder on on the Win 98 machine - but I cannot see
where the fault may be.
Any suggestions?
