Pc restarting
Posted by bottom_line on January 12th, 2006

I installed XP Home on a new hard drive, now the pc restarts itself from time
to time when I'm online. The error log shows the same thing happens every
time: "The server {long server ID} was not registered with DCOM within the
required timeout" (this is my own translation from swedish, probarbly a bit
different in english).
Tried to uncheck the automatic restart-box in control panel/system, that
helped a bit, now I have 2-3 restarts per hour instead of 5-6.
I run Panda anti virus and firewall.
Anyone got a clue?

I have run into this problem at the PC repair shop I worked at and I must
say, these random restart problems can be the absolute worst to fix. In rare
cases, problems with the processor can cause reboots, but don't dwell on that
just yet. A common cause is a power supply issue, which can account for a
number of PC problems. And you never know...the reinstall could have screwed
up somewhere. If you want to try it, I would recommend wiping and
reinstalling the OS on your hard drive.
Good luck

Thank you for advics.
Found out the antivirus update was part of the problem, but I still haven't
managed to sort the problem out completely. Perhaps it will end with a
reinstall...
